The_dragon_of_dragons:
The Dragon of Dragons award is granted since 1998 by Krakow Film Foundation Programme Council to the makers of documentary and animated films, whose work had a significant influence on the development of the world cinema in these genres. Among the previous winners of the Dragon of Dragons award there are such renowned film makers as: Kazimierz Karabasz, Allan King, Albert Maysles, Werner Herzog, Stephen and Timothy Quay, Raoul Servais and Jerzy Kucia.

1998 - Bohdan Kosiński (b. 1922, d. 2003) 
Polish documentary filmmaker. Known for: Na torach (1971), Budowałem miasto (1972), Szkic etnograficzny (1976) Narodziny Solidarności (1981) Przerwany film (1993).
 
1999 – Jan Lenica (b. 1928, d. 2001)
Polish graphic designer and animator. Known for: Unce upon a Time…(1957, with Walerian Borowczyk) House (1958, with Walerian Borowczyk), Labyrinth (1962), Rhinoceros (1964) A (1965), Ubu et la grande gidouille (1979).
 
2000 – Raymond Depardon (b. 1942)
French photographer and documentary filmmaker. Known for: Reporters (1981), News Items (1983), New York, N.Y. (1985), Urgences (1987), Caught in the Acts (1994).
 
2001 – Jan Švankmajer (b. 1934)
Czech stop-motion animator. Known for: The Fall of the House of Usher (1982), Dimensions of Dialogue (1982), Virile Games (1988), Darkness/Light/Darkness (1989), Faust (1994), Conspirators of Pleasure (1996), Little Otik (2000).
 
2002 – Werner Herzog (b. 1942)
German film director. His movie Encounters at the End of the World was nominated for the Academy Award. Won the best director award for Fitzcarraldo at the Cannes Film Festival.
Known for: Land of Silence and Darkness (1971), Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972), The Mystery of Kaspar Hauser (1974), Lessons of Darkness (1991), My Best Fiend (1999), Grizzly man (2005), Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010).
 
2003 – brothers Stephen and Timothy Quay (b. 1947)
American stop-motion animators. Known for: Street of Crocodiles (1986), Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream People Call Human Life (1995), In Absentia (2000), The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes (2005), Maska (2010).
 
2004 – Albert Maysles (b. 1926 - d. 2015)
American documentary filmmaker. Together with his brother David nominated for the Academy Award for Christo’s Valley Curtain. Known for: Monterey Pop (1968), Salesman (1969), Gimme Shelter (1970), Grey Gardens (1975).
 
2005 – Jurij Norsztein (b. 1941)
Russian animator. Best known for: The Heron and the Crane (1974), Hedgehog in the Fog (1975), Tale of Tales (1979).
 
2006 – Kazimierz Karabasz (b. 1930)
Polish documentary filmmaker. Known for: Where the Devil Says Goodnight (1956), People From an Empty Zone (1957), The Musicians (1960), The Year of Frank W (1967).
 
2007 – Raoul Servais (b. 1928)
Belgian animator. His movie Harpya won Palme d'Or for Best Short Film at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival. Known for: Chromophobia (1966), Goldframe (1969), Operation X-70 (1971), Harpya (1979).
 
2008 – Allan King (b. 1930, d. 2009)
Canadian documentary filmmaker. Known for: Warrendale (1967), A Married Couple (1969), Dying at Grace (2003), Memory for Max, Claire, Ida and Company (2005).
 
2009 – Jerzy Kucia (b. 1942)
Polish animator. Known for: Powrót (1972), Refleksy (1979), Parada (1986), Przez pole (1992), Tuning the Instruments (2000).
 
2010 – Jonas Mekas (b. 1922)
American avant-garde filmmaker of Lithuanian descent. Known for: Guns of the Trees (1962), The Brig (1964), Walden (1969), Reminiscences of a Journey to Lithuania (1972), Lost, lost, lost (1975), As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty (2000).   
 
2011 – Piotr Kamler (b. 1936)
Polish animator. Known for: Lignes et points (1961), La planete vert (1966), Laraignelephant (1967), Le trou (1969), Délicieuse catastrophe (1970), Chronopolis (1982).
 
2012 - Helena Třeštíková (b. 1949)
Czech documentary filmmaker. Best known for: Two Anniversaries of Jan Zrzavy (1976), Dotek svetla (1979), Sladké století (1998), Rene (2008), Katka (2010), Private Universe (2011).
 
2013 – Paul Driessen (b. 1940)
Dutch film director and animator. His short movie 3 Misses was nominated for the Academy Award. Known for: On Land, at Sea and in the Air (1980), Spotting a Cow (1984), Tip top (1984), The End of the World in Four Seasons (1995), The Boy Who Saw The Iceberg (2000).    
 
2014 - Bogdan Dziworski (b. 1941)
Polish documentary filmmaker and cinematographer. Best known for: Krzyz i topór (1972), Pięciobój nowoczesny (1975), Hokej (1976), Dwubój klasyczny (1978), Sceny narciarskie z Franzem Klammerem (1980), Fechmistrz (1980), Kilka opowieści człowieku (1983), Szapito (1985), Hommage a Beksiński (1987).

2015 - Priit Pärn (b. 1946)
Estonian animator. Best known for: Breakfast On The Grass (1987),1895 (1995), Karl And Marilyn (2003), Divers In The Rain (2010), Pilots On The Way Home (2014).

2016 - Marcel Łoziński (b. 1940)
Polish documentary filmmaker. Best known for: How to live (1977), Marticulation (1979), The microphone test (1980), My place (1986), 89 mm from Europe (1993), Anything can happen (1995), Father and son on a journey (2013)
