The Project DOCS+SCIENCE.AFO/KFF 2016 is a common project of International Festival of Science Documentary Films Academia Film Olomouc and DOCS+SCIENCE section of Documentary Films at the Krakow Film Festival, which focuses on Scientific Cinematography. The main aim is to enhance and improve the production and development of science documentary films across Eastern Europe. This project isdivided in two parts and includes workshop Camp 4Science, which takes place in Olomouc and DOCS+SCIENCE DAY and screenings in Krakow. The main mission of project Camp 4Science is to stimulate production of new science documentary films in Visegrad countries and to help ongoing projects reach next stage of realization or find co producer. Our ambition was to connect the worlds of the audiovisual industry and science. We wanted to stimulate the emergence of new popular science projects. DOCS+SCIENCE Day consists of panel discussions, case studies and science docs’ screenings. Its purpose is to present to the audience documentaries about science, discoveries, innovations as well as about scientists, discoverers and science enthusiasts.

10.15 - 11.00 - SUMMARY OF FINANCIAL AND DISTRIBUTION RESOURCES FOR SCIENTIFIC FILM
Even though science documentaries regularly make their way to the key documentary co production events, festivals or cinemas, there is a segment of the market uniquely specialized for science production. If you are planning your first science documentary film, our elementary survey will give you a basic overview of your financial and coproduction possibilities. Which science commissioning editors to talk to? Which broadcasters still co produce with independent producers? What event to attend to meet the relevant science oriented industry professionals? And which festival there are for the science films after the broadcasting circle is over? Christine Reisen, former ARTE´s commissioning editor will bring some of the key names and contacts that can help you around the science documentary market.

11.00 – 12.00 HIGHLIGHTS OF CAMP 4SCIENCE
Four years of Camp 4Science show that some topics keep bouncing back. Using examples of concrete projects and films, we will unveil some of the recurrent questions and answers.
Broadcaster and University: Co production of the Future?
Growing number of examples show that science films and series might reach out for alternative financial sources. Unlike other film genres, they can turn to science institutions and universities. Besides the obvious benefits, what are the challenges of such co productions? And who pays and who decides?
Beyond the Local Broadcaster
Both in Poland and Czech Republic, the local broadcasters only rarely co produce ambitious internationally oriented science documentaries. What to do to overcome such conditions?
Where do I Fit?
Am I too creative to fit the science film market? Or is my approach scientific enough? These and many other questions might touch the ongoing debate. There might not be any definite and general answers but there are definitely some helpful examples of creative strategies.

ČLOVĚK TO JE VĚDA (HUMAN, THAT IS SCIENCE) CASE STUDY #1
dir. Bára Kopecká,
prod. Česká televize, Vernes,
Karel Janeček, Czech Republic, 2016

May a hormonal contraception alter the way we sense our partner? People have finally come to terms with the fact that biochemical processes are to blame for our behaviour, our sense of happiness and unhappiness or love. A group of Czech scientists along with the British evolutionary psychologist Craig Roberts have studied what influence a small dose of synthetic oestrogen and progestin can have on people’s choice of a life partner and satisfaction in a relationship. These two hormones are daily taken in the form of a birth control pill by a million women in the Czech Republic alone. What did they find out? Do these pills actually affect our lives? To answer these questions come to Academia Film Olomouc and see the documentary Man Is a Science.

PLANETA ČESKO (PLANET CZECH) CASE STUDY #2
dir. Marian Polak,
prod. Radim Procházka, Czech
Republic, 2016

Within the environmentof open cast brown coalmines and spoil tips which is a reminder of a lunar landscape, one finds paradoxically a true tale of an impregnable wild countryside. For most people it is a symbol of an ecological catastrophe, same as the abandoned industrial complexes, former army training ranges or dense woods gobbled up by the bark beetle. But for nature they are untamed spots which bring with them a process of recuperation and self preservation. And Czech nature can thank one more thing for remaining untamed: such a variety is to be found in just a few places on Earth. Just beyond our backyard we see every day’s dramas of animals and plants taking place which tend to fascinate us in films that come from the far reaches of our planet. Swamps, jungles and deserts can all be found here. The film crew is setting out on a twelve month expedition in order to explore Planet Czechia.

15.30 – 16.30 CASE STUDIES BBC – ‘WILD AFRICA 3D’

Representatives from BBC will share their experiences in prepared case study with filming, producing and promoting of this movie. Wild Africa is another spectacular film from the BBC production. Lions, elephants, reptiles or a flock of flamingos, everyone needs to adapt to the annual water cycle, everyone looks forward to the monsoon rains, this being a sort of happy ending in this harsh African climate. The challenge on the part of the filmmakers was to capture Africa as we know it from a different perspective. The greatest complications were, for example, the almost hundred percent air humidity or temperatures rising up to 50 °C.
